What to Expect After DVT Treatment?

Once the blood flow in the affected vein is restored, patients can expect the swelling and pain in the affected leg to decrease.

Mobility will improve, and the patient will experience a return to his or her original energy levels.

Unfortunately, when a DVT is not diagnosed and treated on time, it can become chronic. Some patients with chronic DVT develop Post Thrombotic Syndrome, caused by the pooling of blood around the calf and ankle. The blood pools because the clot scars and damages the vein, and the blood can’t travel to the heart as it is supposed to.

Post Thrombotic Syndrome is characterized by long-term swelling, pain, skin-color changes, and even skin ulceration—with decrease in the quality of life for patients.

Unfortunately, not all the symptoms may be reversible.
But the earlier the patient sees a vascular surgeon for treatment, the better the results that can be expected.

About half the people that suffer DVT can expect a recurrence at some point in their lives.
