Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do about our genetics. If both our parents had varicose veins, there’s a great chance we will too.
However, we can help by getting plenty of exercise and losing weight, that is, if we are sedentary and overweight. Elevating our legs after a long day at work may also be helpful.

If there is a family predisposition to varicose veins, it may be wise to wear compression stockings to help slow their development.
Also, in this case it is also a good idea to consider an ultrasound of the veins of the legs to detect any problems which have not yet become symptomatic. This kind of ultrasound should be done by a vascular surgeon with an accredited ultrasound laboratory, where you can be sure the test is done correctly.
Early treatment may head off future complications.
