Avoiding long periods of sitting or lying down is very important for preventing DVT. 

When traveling for long periods of time, make sure to get up and walk around. Many people suffer DVT''s after sitting in a long flight, without walking around and stretching.

Maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding birth control pills also decrease your risk.

If you are prone to blood clots, due to family history or for some other reason, a yearly ultrasound of the deep veins of your legs is recommended.
